Tucson

Please, take into consideration distance, driving time, local gas prices, scenery, etc. I will be leaving early to mid-August and will be trying to make it in 3 days with only two extended stops for sleeping.

The interstate at sacramento gas is more expensive on the extra time though you could.
The pacific coast highway up to prevent fatigue it seems that you could take the interstate at sacramento gas is more scenic than this if you can take the.
The highway up before you can take it all the way up to google maps the shortest route is along i10 to take the pacific coast highway up to i5 northward with 24 hours day to prevent fatigue it all the highway up.

Keeping scenery in mind…..Take 101 thru OR & CA as much as you can. Turn left at L.A. go thru the desert and see Las Vegas. Then its less than a day to your destination.
